About My Car
Call me hooked. Call me addicted. Heck, you can even call me crazy
if you want. The fact is, I must really love these little ponies. This
is the second one I've bought in just under 5 years, and I'm not stopping here!
This one's a 1976 Cobra II, with all kinds of goodies...302 V8, 4 speed
tranny, locking rear end (woo-hoo!), and a slight aggressive, sporty look
to it all. A look that just screams "POWER"; but, in it's stock form,
lacks it where a V8 really should have plenty of it. That's okay, I'll be
changing all that in this little restomod project. The plan is to make it
look stock, but run a lot better than stock. I've got all kinds of modifications
planned for it, it's just a matter of time and money now.
A little more about how I got it: I originally saw the ad in the paper
for this car back in June 1998, just before the All-Ford Nationals in Carlisle.
I called the guy up and made arrangements to go check it out. I did, and it
was definitely a fixer-upper. At that time, I didn't have a place to put it,
otherwise, it wouldn't have taken me so long to get it. After seeing it the first
time, I made several runs back to see if it was still there; usually once a week.
Around October, I mentioned my plight to a close friend and he said "Well heck, you
can keep it here if you want!" I liked the idea...but at the same time, didn't
want to intrude.
My friend kept asking me if I ever called the guy back (I did hang on
to the ad), and I kept saying no. He told me whenever I did, his backyard
was still available. Finally, I got the nerve up to call the guy...in December!
He must've been surprised to hear that someone wanted to actually buy it...he said
it had just been sitting, his son was going to come get it but never did. My
friend and I went over to look at it one Sunday afternoon, and made arrangements
to pick it up that week. Tuesday night, December 8, 1998, I bought this 1976 Cobra II
for a project car. We trailered it to my friend's place and it still sits there,
waiting for a complete tear-down and rebuild. Come on spring time! Heheh...
I paid $800 for it, and it's got the V8, 4 speed, locking rear,
moonroof, Hooker headers, Edelbrock 4bbl intake/carb setup, Cragar S/S
rims, and is currently white. When I'm done with it, the wheels will be
upgraded to 14x7s, the engine will be pumping out over 300 horses, and will
be it's original color--black with gold stripes. There's a lot of work to do,
but it'll all be worth it in the end I think. I can't wait to get started!
