Mustang II Grill Identification
Each year of production of the Mustang II saw changes in the front grill.
Some late 1977 models may have 1978 style grills. (Most likely on cars with a sequential unit number > 400000.)
The photos contained here are from various Gallery entries and are used for illustration purposes.
Due to the easy interchange on most model years, the grill should not be used as an indicator of year of manufacture. Rather, this page is intended to be used to show what grill should be correct for a particular model year.
1974 The Mustang grill in 1974 was unique to the Mustang II.
It featured a recessed grill, thicker grill surround, and short hood.
The grill is all silver with a horizontal bar in the signal lights, clear lenses, and amber bulbs.
1975
With the return of the V8 engine, the hood was lengthened and the grill surround was made thinner, pushing the grill forward and no longer recessed.
All 1975-1978 grills will interchange.
The 1975 grill is all silver with removable chrome signal bezels, clear lenses and amber bulbs.
1976
The 1976 grill is all silver with removable chrome signal bezels, amber lenses and clear bulbs
The 1976 Cobras received all black grills but retained the chrome signal bezels.
1977
The 1977 grill has only the horizontal bars in silver with the vertical bars black. It has removable chrome signal bezels with clear lenses and amber bulbs. (The Cobra and Mach 1 received all black grills.)
1978
The 1978 grill is all black or dark gray. It has integral signal bezels, clear lenses, and amber bulbs.
