302(5.0l V8) Engine Swap
in 75-78 Mustang II all models

(from 2.3l I4 or 2.8l V6)

Items to remove from car

  • Engine assembly 2.3/2.8
  • Power steering hoses, both pressure and return to rack and pinion
  • Engine bay wiring harness
  • Wire from starter solenoid to starter 2.3/2.8
  • Transmission assembly and attaching wiring i.e. neutral start safety switch and reverse wiring
  • Kick down rod, crossmember and transmission mount
  • Speedo cable and plastic driven gear assembly
  • Driveshaft assembly (auto and manual)
  • Drivers side motor mount frame support
  • Accelerator cable linkage (gas)
  • Rubber fuel lines from steel line on inner fender to fuel pump
  • Radiator, fan shroud and mounting brackets
  • A/C forward of the firewall
  • Auto transmission cooling lines 2.3/2.8
  • Rear axle assembly 2.3 only (needs an upgrade)
  • Fresh air tube to air cleaner assembly 2.3/2.8

Items to be reused from removed parts

  • Neutral start safety switch from the automatic trans
  • Single 2.3 74/78 or dual hump crossmember from 2.8 74/76
  • Right hand motor mount frame support
  • Reverse switch wiring harness from manual trans
  • Automatic or manual trans shifter /selector 2.3/2.8
  • 8 inch rear axle from 2.8 (2.3 will require an 8" axle upgrade)
  • A/C pump assembly
  • Alternator assembly 2.3 /2.8 standard and hi output
  • Alternator harness
  • Battery to solenoid wire HOT
  • Coil from 2.3/2.8

  • Left hand motor mount frame support
  • Right and left motor mounts 5.0 75-78
  • Auto or manual driveshaft 5.0 2.8 75-78
  • Exhaust system 75/76 dual or 77/78 single exhaust
  • Accelerator cable from 75-78
  • Oil pan assembly and pick up tube from 75-78 5.0
  • Automatic transmission (C-4) from 75-78
  • Manual transmission from 76-78 5.0 including clutch cable
  • Manual transmission pedal assembly from 2.3/2.8 and 5.0 same 75-78
  • Radiator from 75/76 or 77/78 5.0
  • Transmission cooling lines from 75-78 5.0
  • Fan shroud from 75/76 or 77/78 5.0
  • Automatic kickdown rod from 5.0 75-78
  • Tach assembly 75/76 orange dials or 77/78 yellow dials
  • Tach reducer assembly located behind tach assembly 75/76 white 77 blue 77/78 black
  • 5.0 Engine wiring harness 1
  • Rear Axle assembly from 75-78 2.8 or 5.0 (for replacing the 2.3 only)
Notes:
15.0 Engine wiring harness must match to build date month and year on the dash harness. Dash harness Part Number is located on wiring loom tape next to fuse box above steering column.

If you are not able to match the engine and dash harness, the motor will not turn over. A 2.8l engine harness will work but will require relooming and re-arrangement of the engine harness. This can be labor and time intensive to achieve a factory appearance.
