There's a tiny button on the side of the switch
closest to the door. You have to get your hand
up behind the dash and between the switch and the
end of the dash then press the button just the
right amount while pulling the knob out. If you
press too much the catch just catches the other
side of the groove in the shaft. Once you finally
get the knob out, use a nail or icepick to shut
the lights off.
There must have been some DOT regulation back in
those years that required the headlight switch
to be mounted through the guage bezel in such a
way that it had to be removed to remove the bezel
and that removing the light switch knob had to be
a major PITA. :P Probably to help thwart odometer
rollbacks at used car dealers, or maybe it was
just a conspiracy of designers and engineers at
all car companies to make this job a real nasty one.

Howdy,
Getting the headlight switch to pull out is really easy: Open the car
door, stand on your head with your back on the seat your feet over
the headrest and your head on the floorboard, snake and twist your
right hand up under the dash like a contortionist until you can feel
the switch box, curse and swear at the Ford engineer who designed this
stupid thing, feel up and caress the switch box until you find a
little button on the top, press it with the tip of the one finger that
can reach it, hold your tounge out just right, then use your left hand
to pull out the headlamp knob.
Scrape your right hand on every piece of metal under the dashboard,
drop your feet back down to the outside of the car, scoot and wiggle
your body out until your butt hits the ground, straighen your twisted
neck, and whatever you do, don't push than damn shaft back in its hole
until you're SURE you're finished.
Simple!

Well.....I found that Undoing the Heater/AC Assembly Switches Below the light
switch and Reaching up and Hitting the Button is A WHOLE Lot easier than
That!
IMO,
Sean
Now I think we have a workable solution.
